Strong Passwords & Cybersecurity Tips | World Password Day

5 Common Website Design Mistakes Small Businesses Make and How to Avoid Them 2

Heads up – World Password Day is on May 1st this year, falling on the first Thursday of the month as always. It’s a perfect chance to have a good think about how seriously we’re taking cybersecurity, not just with our passwords, but across our entire digital lives.

Why Passwords Are More Crucial Than Ever

Passwords are your first line of defence against unauthorised access to your personal and professional information. Yet, even with cyber threats constantly on the rise, heaps of people still use simple, easy-to-guess passwords or reuse the same one across multiple websites. World Password Day is a nudge to:

Cybersecurity: It's Bigger Than Just Passwords

Good password habits are vital, but they’re only part of the picture. In today’s connected world, cybersecurity needs to be part of our daily routine, both at work and at home. Here are a few key practices we and our clients should adopt:

  • Regular Updates: Keep your software, apps, and operating systems up-to-date to patch security holes.
  • Phishing Awareness: Be suss about dodgy emails or messages trying to trick you into giving up personal info. Always double-check before clicking or replying.
  • Secure Wi-Fi Networks: Use strong passwords for your home and business networks. Steer clear of public Wi-Fi for sensitive stuff like banking.
  • Back Up Your Data: Regularly back up important files to secure, offline storage. This can be a lifesaver if you get hit by ransomware.

A Shared Responsibility

Businesses, especially, have a responsibility to protect not just their own data, but their clients’ data too. Training staff on cybersecurity best practices, having clear policies, and investing in solid security systems are absolutely critical.

How I Got Into Cybersecurity

Years ago, around 2017, I got stung by a phishing scam. Given how tech-savvy I thought I was even back then, I’m almost embarrassed to admit I fell for it. I was selling a second-hand camera on eBay for about $2000 AUD. When the auction finished, I got an email supposedly from PayPal saying the money was in my account but would take up to 48 hours to clear (some international payments were slower back then). Super keen to get it sorted, I boxed up the camera, popped down to the post office, and off it went – to Greece.

Forty-eight hours passed… no money. Seventy-two hours… still nothing. I started wondering what was going on. That’s when I looked closer at the email. Everything looked absolutely spot on, but there were just three characters out of place in the URL – it’s been a while, so I can’t remember exactly what, but it was really subtle. I immediately complained to PayPal and eBay. Unsurprisingly, I got no compensation. So that was $2k down the drain. I ended up as just another statistic alongside the millions of these cases happening every year – and it’s only getting worse.

This whole experience pushed me towards learning about cybersecurity, and it’s ultimately why I take online privacy so seriously now. It’s also why I don’t share my face online – massive thanks to Plum Digital Hub for supporting this. I really encourage everyone, especially the younger generations, to think hard about their digital footprint. It takes mere seconds (milliseconds, in fact) to upload something personal, but it can be practically impossible to completely remove it, stop it being copied, or prevent it from being manipulated later on. Definitely food for thought.

Final Thoughts

World Password Day is a valuable reminder that cybersecurity isn’t a set-and-forget task – it’s an ongoing commitment. By taking small, consistent steps, we can build a safer online environment for ourselves, our businesses, and our clients.

This May 1st, let’s all double down on protecting what matters most online.
